Raymond, known as ‘Ray’ was born 22nd. December 1920 at St. Helen’s Tasmania ,  the sixth child of Herbert and Madge Barber.  He enlisted at Launceston on 8th. July 1940 giving his date of birth as 12th May 1920.  The reason for the difference in dates is unknown to the author.  His trade was given as carpenter and his religion, Church of England.  He had a fair complexion, brown hair, grey-green eyes and his height was given as 5’63/4”.  His training was completed at Brighton Tasmania where he was allotted to the 2/40th Infantry Battalion.  He was transferred from Brighton to Bonegilla 7th January 1941 and embarked for service overseas 8th. January 1941.  

On the 30th.April 1942 he was reported ‘presumed missing and a prisoner of war’ and his date of death finally given as 26th June 1943.  

His grave is located in Kanchanaburi War Cemetery ref I.H.57
