Born Kingscote Kangaroo Island South Australia to Francis James and Queenie Kate Barnes Flt Sgt Barnes was a Minister’s student with the Tasmanian Baptist Union when he enlisted in the RAAF. 

He was the wireless operator on Wellington Mk.111 BJ 652 which was flying a night cross country flight when on the return journey it was observed to have flown into a rock outcrop and was completely destroyed. All six crew members including Flt Sgt Barnes were killed.
