World War 11 Casualties
Belbin, Sydney Frank
Born 5th October 1908 Lilly St Glebe Hobart Tasmania to Joseph Stephen Belbin and Emma Elizabeth (nee Griffiths). Was the navigator on Lancaster W1220 of 103 squadron which took off from Elsham Wolds on the night of September 5th 1942 with orders to bomb Bremen Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after takeoff and it failed to return to base. The aircraft was shot down over the Netherlands by a german night fighter and crashed at Jelsum Friesland - all seven of the crew including Flt Sgt Belbin was buried in the Leeuwarderadeel Protestant churchyard.
