World War 11 Casualties
Bell, Lincoln John BELL, Lincoln John Lieutenant He was the son of John William and Ethel Harriet Victoria Bell and husband of Joan Mary Bell of Oatlands Tasmania. Was a Captain in the New Guinea Volunteer Rifles discharged 7 July 1942 then became an enlisted member of the Royal Australian Naval Voluntary Reserve. During the evacuation from New Britain in 1942 he and two others were placed in charge of the western area of Talasea. They worked unceasingly in getting troops through to Itoki plantation. All three refused to leave New Britain, staying on and being responsible for secret intelligence which was forwarded to Allied forces For this work he received a civil commendation for “brave conduct and meritorious services rendered in New Guinea and the Island Territories during the enemy invasion in 1942”. He was later promoted to Lieutenant and on board HMAS Magnetic when he was killed in action Rai Coast near Saidor on the 1st. April 1943 aged 37 He is commemorated in the Lae War Cemetery New Guinea His brother, Donald Joseph Bell was on the Montevideo Maru as a civilian and is presumed dead.
