Betteridge, Arthur Frederick
Born Smithton Tasmania to Frederick and Clara Elizabeth Betteridge Flying Officer Betteridge was married and working as a costing clerk at St. Kilda when he enlisted in the RAAF. He was part of operation “THESIS” which was set down for 23 July 1943 the objective being land, road and shipping strikes against Suda Bay. The result was a disaster for 460 squadron with the loss of 5 aircraft over Crete, another crash landing on return to base and only two landing safely - a 75% casualty rate. Flying Officer Betteridge was lost in the second wave attack and is buried in the Suda Bay Cemetery Crete.
