World War 11 Casualties
Blake, Leslie Malcolm
Born 10th August 1915 New Norfolk Tasmania to George and Annie Ida Blake (nee Bantick) he enlisted Hobart 3rd June 1941 and was posted to the 2/40th Battalion Australian Infantry. He was a prisoner of war and taken aboard the Tamahoko Maru to go to Japan to work in the factories there. One of the ships in the convoy exploded after being torpedoed by the US submarine USS Tang. Nearby the Tamahoko Maru was almost blown apart and water poured in through a gaping hole in her side. There were 267 Australians on board and only 72 survived.
