MAN'S BODY RECOVERED FROM RIVER

The body of Verdun G. Blazely (25), returned soldier, who is believed to have jumped into the River Tamar from the wharf near the fish market, Launceston, about 10 pm on Wednesday, was recovered at 11.50 yesterday morning by Sgt Cooley of the police force, and two military police.

Dragging operations yesterday morning resulted in the discovery of the body, which was dressed in military uniform, about 30 yards from the wharf in about 10ft. of water.

Blazely, who was unmarried, and had been in the Army for four years, was home on 24 days leave. He appeared to be quite normal. When assisting his mother, Mrs W. G. Green, who lives at Lower Charles St. to prepare supper about 9.50 on Wednesday night, he suddenly became very agitated. He went out into the street, and over to the wharf. Mr Green followed him, but when he got there Blazely was in the water clinging to some piles. He left the piles and swam into the middle of the river, where he was last seen.

An inquest will be opened this morning.
