World War 11 Casualties
Chalmers, John Sneddon
Even though John Chalmers was born in Sydney 20 Mar 1910 I have included him and the three other RMO’s who were working at the Royal Hobart Hospital in Tasmania when they enlisted. He enlisted on the 26th August 1940 as a medical officer and was given the rank of Captain. He was later promoted to Major. Major Chalmers was deputy superintendent of the hospital prior to his enlistment in August, 1940. He was killed when the Rakuyo Maru on which he had volunteered to go as M.O with a P.O.W. draft to Japan was torpedoed by the American submarine “Sealion” He was afloat on a hatch in the water for four days suffering from malaria and exposure when he was pulled onto a raft but it was too late, he died the next night.
