Clerke, Richard Martyn

 

Born 16 July 1910 Wilmot Tasmania to Thomas John and Ella Nette Clerke (nee Best) and was a wool buyer before he enlisted in the army where he was posted to the 2/43 Battalion.  He was killed in action in New Guinea.

KILLED IN ACTION

Advice has been received of the death in action in .New Guinea oŁ Lieut. R. M. Clerke, son of Mrs. Clerke and the late Capt. T. J. Clerke of Sheffield. Lieut. Clerke was born at Wilmot and completed his education at Friends High School, Hobart. Before the death of his father he assisted him in business at Sheffield. Lieut Clerke enlisted at the outbreak of war, and obtained his commission before leaving Australia. He served in Palestine, Syria and the Western Desert and returned to Australia with the 9th Division. Lieut. Clerke married Miss V.Armstrong, of Devonport, who is a corporal in the A.W.A.S. stationed in Melbourne. His mother lives at 19 Hillside Crescent, Launceston
