World War 11 Casualties

If you could spare a few dollars to help with the running costs of this website would be very much appreciated.

Thank you from Gravesites of Tasmania.

Cotton, Maxwell Tylney

The following is taken from TASMANIANS AT WAR IN THE AIR 1939-1945 with the kind permission of Brian Winspear

Brother of Doug Cotton, well known grazier at “Kelvedon” south of Swansea , was one of the many Tasmanians who made the supreme sacrifice and gave his life for his country.

He was a Pilot Officer, flying Hurricanes and Whirlwinds in No. 263 Squadron R.A.F.  In June 1943, 4 Whirlwind bombers and 16 Spitfires attacked 4 minesweepers near Guernsey , and Max’s aircraft was seen to blow up while bombing one of the ships.

He was awarded the DFC posthumously on 5/07/43 for his determination in pressing attacks, and for flying his seriously damaged aircraft back and landing safely on three occasions.

Max was born at Swansea in 1921, went to Friends School , and excelled at all sporting activities.
