Cranwell, Henry Alfred Geoffrey
23051 Stoker Henry Alfred Geoffrey Cranwwell, HMAS Sydney II, of Burnie, Tasmania. Stoker Cranwell enlisted in the RAN on 5 April 1939. He was killed in action, aged 21, when HMAS Sydney was sunk in the Indian Ocean by the German auxiliary cruiser Kormoran on 20 November 1941 Born 10th November 1920 and was living at 30 Strahan Street Burnie, with his next of kin listed as Pearl Cranwell, when he enlisted and was posted to H.M.A.S. Sydney. He was a Stoker when on 19th November 1941, following a battle with the German raider, HSK Kormoran in the Indian Ocean off the Western Australian coast H.M.A.S. Sydney disappeared, almost with a trace. The loss of the Sydney with its full war complement of 645 remains to this day Australia’s worst ever naval disaster and one of its greatest wartime mysteries. The only confirmed relics found were a lifebelt and a Carley life float damaged by shellfire
