McCabe Donald Wolsey

Born 13^th December 1921 at Ulverstone Tasmania to the Reverend Francis Joseph and Ann Muir McCabe of Holy Trinity Church Hobart Donald was 19 years old when he enlisted and was posted to H.M.A.S. Sydney.

He was a Sub Lieutenant when on 19^th November 1941, following a battle with the German raider, HSK Kormoran in the Indian Ocean off the Western Australian coast H.M.A.S. Sydney disappeared, almost with a trace.

The loss of the Sydney with its full war complement of 645 remains to this day Australia’s worst ever naval disaster and one of its greatest wartime mysteries. The only confirmed relics found were a lifebelt and a Carley life float damaged by shellfire 

A brother of Donald, Angus Wolsey McCabe also lost his life 6^th December 1943 in New Guinea when he died from wounds received.  He was a schoolteacher, born at Longford and married when he enlisted. His wife was living in Queensland when he was killed.
