World War 11 Casualties

If you could spare a few dollars to help with the running costs of this website would be very much appreciated.

Thank you from Gravesites of Tasmania.

McLoughlin Eric Markham

Born Hobart Tasmania to Frank Joseph and Christina Markham McLoughlin, Eric was listed as a Marine Fireman when he enlisted and was a stoker on HMAS Goorangai which holds the distinction of being the first Royal Australian Navy vessel lost in World War 2.

It was about 8.30 in the evening of 20th November and HMAS Goorangai was steaming from Queenscliff to Portsea when she was struck forward of the funnel by HMAT Duntroon which was leaving Sydney loaded with troops.  The Goorangai was cut in two and sank in less than a minute.

Wartime security prevented Duntroon from switching on searchlights to look for survivors but she did lower lifeboats, fire rockets and sound three blasts on the whistle to alert the residents of Queenscliff.

Despite an extensive search none of the crew was found alive and only six bodies were recovered
