World War 11 Casualties

If you could spare a few dollars to help with the running costs of this website would be very much appreciated.

Thank you from Gravesites of Tasmania.

McOrmand Thomas Vernon

Born Campbell Town Tasmania to William John and Kate May McOrmond, Thomas was listed as living at 16 Middle Street Launceston and described as a labourer when he enlisted.

He was one of many young men sent to Greece to fight a battle they could not win and was later captured and taken to Stalag 18A Wolfsberg in Austria .

On the 18th December 1944 at 12.30 in the afternoon the camp was bombed by American aircraft (72 high explosive bombs were dropped) destroying two of the barrack blocks and damaging the hospital.  Approximately 48 prisoners of war were killed in this raid including Thomas Vernon McOrmond.

The Red Cross later made an official complaint to the Americans about the attack.
