McPherson Alan
During the Second World War he enlisted as VX40839 Lance Corporal (L Cpl) McPherson, 2/10 Field Company, Royal Australian Engineers. L Cpl McPherson was captured by the Japanese when Singapore fell, and imprisoned in Changi. Later transferred to various work camps on the Burma Thailand Railway, he worked on the Burmese section of the railway. He died on 25 October 1943, suffering from beriberi, dysentery, jungle fever and malaria, and is buried in Thanbyuzayat War Cemetery, Myanmar (Burma). The Mercury 12 Oct 1945 Spr Alan McPherson, son of Mr and Mrs A. McPherson. 396 Liverpool St., Hobart; died of illness while a prisoner after capture at Singapore.
