World War 11 Casualties
Sawford Bertie George Born Oatlands Tasmania on the 25th October 1914 the son of George and Cecilia Sawford was married and living in Melbourne when he enlisted, Private Bertie George Sawford was a member of the 2/29th Battalion and one of the many allied prisoners held in the Sandakan Prisoner of War Camp in North Borneo having been transferred there from Singapore as part of B Force. He had been at Changi but was transported from there on the 7th July 1942 on the tramp ship Ubi Maru which arrived in Sandakan Harbour on the 18th July 1942. He died from illness as a prisoner of the Japanese on 11th April 1945.
