ACCIDENT FINDING Inquest on Death At Third Basin A finding that Edgar Raymond Smith was drowned as a result of an accident was recorded by the Coroner (Mr Stops) at the inquest at Launceston yesterday. Smith lost his life at Third Basin on November 7. Sgt Cartledge represented the police. Robert Walter Edward Gray said he was one of a party of 11 persons who visited the Third Basin. Edgar Smith boarded a canoe and paddled up the South Esk River. Witness saw him return towards the Third Basin, and then saw him in the river clinging to the canoe Witness swam to Smith and tried to pull him to the bank, but the current was too strong, and he took Smith back to the canoe. He went with the current, holding Smith, and once when Smith sank he dived for him and took him to the canoe. They were then in the basin, said Gray, and he was becoming exhausted. Peggy Roden. Leslie Blair, and Charles Smith swam to them, and he had to return to the bank, leaving Edgar Smith with Peggy Roden, as Blair and Charles Smith had to return to the shore.
