Hobart Airman Missing

Mrs K Sproule, Hobart, has been notified that her son, Ft-Lt Daryl Maxwell Sproule, RAAF, is missing as a result of air operations on August 2.

Ft-Lt Sproule was educated at the Hobart High School and served his articles with the legal firm of Gatenby, Johnson, and Walker, obtaining his degree of LLB. He was a prominent member of the Cananore Football Club, with which he played until his enlistment more than three years ago.

"The Mercury" Special Service

CANBERRA, Thurs.-Award of the distinguished flying cross to the late Sq-Ldr Daryl Maxwell Sproule, R.A.A.F., Hobart, was announced tonight by the Governor-General (Mr McKell).

The award was for gallant and distinguished service in the South West Pacific between July 1 and September 30, 1943.

The official citation states that Sq-Ldr Sproule started operational flying at the start of Japanese operations in Malaya. He consistently displayed exceptional skill and courage against greatly superior forces and was credited with shooting down one enemy fighter aircraft.

On his return to Australia he continued operational flying and was appointed flight commander of No. 77 Squadron.
