Born Scottsdale Tasmania to George and Mary Ann Sutton he was a miner when he enlisted in the AIF. 

WAR CASUALTIES. Mrs. M. A. Sutton, of Pyengana, has been notified by the Defence Department that her son, Gunner Robert Edward Sutton was killed in action on June 18. Gunner Sutton enlisted in October, 1939 and landed in England in June, 1940,  here he erved for six months before re embarking for the Middle East. A brother, Sapper Charles Sutton was reported missing only a fortnight ago. There are two other brothers Driver Noel N. Sutton and Private Sydney J. Sutton serving.
