DEATH IN AIR ACCIDENT

Sgt.-Pilot Woolnough

Advice has been received of the death in an air accident in England, of Sgt. Pilot Jack Stephen Richard Woolnough, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Woolnough, of Kingston Beach, in his 25th year.

Sgt.-Pilot Woolnough went to England with the first R.A.A-F contingent. He was the first Australian under the Empire Air Scheme who completed 200 actual bombing hours, having made 36 raids on Germany and enemy-occupied territory. Recently he qualified for a period of "rest" in which he was to have carried out the duties of a bombing in- structor. His letters home, extracts from which were published in "The Mercury' recently, gave vivid accounts of raids.

Educated at the Hobart High School Sgt.-Pilot Woolnough was employed in the Supply and Tender Department before he enlisted. He played cricket and football for Kingborough teams. He married Miss Jessie Worsley, of Margate, a few days before he left Tasmania.
