CHARITABLE INSTITUTION BREACHES RESULTING IN GAOL TERMS

Extracts from the Campbell Street Gate-book

 1873—1890

Compiled by Laurie Moody

It appears there were a number of charitable institutions in Hobart during the later part of the 19th century. The most well known was at New Town, the Cascades Asylum at South Hobart, the Brickfields at North Hobart and the New Norfolk Asylum. Breaches of the Charitable Institution Act resulted mostly in one month or fourteen day sentences. Unfortunately, these breaches are not shown but were presumably for drunkenness, assaults and other minor infringements that probably occurred on the premises. On one such occasion a prisoner was sentenced to three months and in two instances, solitary confinement was used.

All offences were presumably dealt with by a magistrate in the Hobart Police Office or police offices where specified. Many of the prisoners listed were former convicts.

Abbreviations:

Van Diemen’s Land is shown as VDL; Campbell Street Gaol is shown as CSG; LSC as Launceston Supreme Court and LGS as Launceston General Session police offices where specified.
