FEMALE OFFENDERS

Extracts from the Campbell Street Gaol Gate-book

1873—1890

 Compiled  by Laurie Moody

The following is a list of 161 female offenders who were convicted of minor offences, which, in many cases were drink related.  Unless otherwise shown, the offences occurred in Hobart.  Thirty-four females have already been listed under previous categories and can be located in the index.  Although a search of BDM records was undertaken for every female this did not always provide information.  Birth and death records were more helpful than those of marriage, and in the case of the surnames Smith and Brown and a number of more common surnames, the many possibilities proved too difficult for me to pursue.  I have left this to you — the genealogists.  It should also be noted that ages entered in the gate-book often differ to the BDM records, and unless specifically stated as having been transported, all women are regarded as born in the colony (native-born).

The use of ‘aka’ indicates ‘also known as’, Van Diemen’s Land appears as VDL, New South Wales as NSW, Campbell Street Gaol as CSG, Ticket of Leave as TOL, Conditional Pardon as CP, Hobart Supreme Court as HSC, Launceston Supreme Court as LSC, Launceston General Sessions as GSL, Births, Deaths and Marriages appear as BDM.  It must be noted the gate-book records show most transported convicts as being free settlers hence the free in Italics.  Females were only sent to CSG from 1888.  The use of [?] indicates possibly more than just one offence.
