INSANE PATIENTS

Extracts from the Campbell Street Gaol Gate-book

1873—1890

 Compiled by Laurie Moody

After the closure of Port Arthur in 1877 prisoners were transferred to the Cascade Asylum.  Because of the unsuitability of the site, in 1890 the inmates were moved to either the New Norfolk Asylum or the Hobart Gaol, their location depending on their condition. Thirty inmates arrived at Campbell Street Gaol on 1 September 1890 and it appears that at a later date most of these were moved to New Norfolk.  If anyone can provide further information it would be appreciated.

A search of BDM records was undertaken for each person mentioned, but unfortunately this did not always provide much information.
