RURAL OFFENCES
Extracts from the Campbell Street Gate-book
1873–1890
Compiled for by Laurie Moody
Part Two
The following is a list of offenders who
were tried at country police offices or courts, usually before the local justice
of the peace. Found guilty, they were sentenced to varying terms of
imprisonment in the Campbell Street Gaol in Hobart.
Some country towns had high incidents of
criminal behaviour, mostly for minor offences.
Towns at the lower end of the scale were
mentioned in Part One. The towns I have selected for Part Two are as follows: -
Carnarvon (Port Arthur), Deloraine, Jerusalem (Colebrook), Longford, Strahan,
Triabunna and Swansea.
It often took quite some time to transport
prisoners from remote areas of the state to Hobart to serve their sentences.
A search of BDM records was undertaken for
each person mentioned, but unfortunately in some cases did not always provide
information. The Federation Index has now been searched and in some cases has
provided further information.
The use of ‘aka’ indicates ‘also known as’,
Van Diemen’s Land appears asVDL,
NewSouthWales as NSW,
Campbell Street Gaol as CSG,
Ticket of Leave as TOL,
Births, Deaths and Marriages appear as BDM
Federation Records as FI.
It must be noted that the gate-book records show most
transported convicts as being free settlers hence the free Italics.
