RURAL OFFENCES

Extracts from the Campbell Street Gaol Gate-book

1873–1890

Compiled by Laurie Moody

Part Five

This is a continuation of the series on Rural Offences. The following is a list of offenders who were tried at country police offices or courts, usually before the local justice of the peace. Found guilty, they were sentenced to varying terms of imprisonment in the Campbell Street Gaol in Hobart.

Hamilton (57) is the only town selected for Part Five. To include the next town in the series would entail a further 93 or more entries. A search of BDM records was undertaken for each person mentioned, but unfortunately in some cases this did not always provide information.

The use of ‘aka’ indicates ‘also known as’, Van Diemen’s Land appears as VDL, New South Wales as NSW, Campbell Street Gaol as CSG, Ticket of Leave as TOL, Conditional Pardon as CP, Births, Deaths and Marriages appear as BDM.  It must be noted that the gate-book records show most transported convicts as being free settlers hence the free in Italics.  It is also to be noted that females were only sent to CSG from 1888.  The use of [?] indicates possibly more than just one.
