YOUNG OFFENDERS IN CAMPBELL STREET
GAOL
1875-1890
Showing children between 9 years and 15 years of age
Compiled by Laurie Moody
To
save space the use of ‘aka’ indicates ‘also known as’, Campbell Street Gaol as
CSG and Hobart Supreme Court as HSC. All other court appearances were made at
the Police Office Hobart unless otherwise mentioned.
The
age of these young offenders commence at nine years and finish at fifteen
years. Most of their offences, apart from an odd one or two, were of a minor
nature — offences that today would barely rate a caution. It is interesting to
note that only two girls appear in the listings and all children appear to have
been native born Tasmanians with the possible exception of 15 year-old Joseph
Tunmore who may have arrived in Tasmania from the mainland.
