TO COURT, TO PORT ARTHUR, TO
CAMPBELL STREET
Compiled by Laurie Moody
In
Volume 24 No 4 March 2004 of
Tasmanian Ancestry I commenced a
series of lists of prisoners who
served sentences at the Campbell
Street Gaol between the years of
1873–90. The listings were taken
from the original gate-book
covering the above-mentioned
years. Unfortunately, due to the
lack of space and the extent of
the information within I was
only able to provide each
prisoner’s surname, given name
and the number of times his name
appeared in the original
gate-book.
However, due to interest shown
by members who have contacted me
I have decided to publish a
complete list of the records of
those 116 prisoners who were
sentenced in the Hobart,
Launceston and Oatlands Courts
to serve terms at Port Arthur
before being transferred to
Campbell Street Gaol prior to
and upon the closure of Port
Arthur. These records include
age, date received, warrant
number, ship arrived on/native
born, condition, offence, trade,
religion, number of prior
offences, read/write, sentence
date and release date. Prior
convictions were not recorded
and would have occurred before
the gate-book commenced in 1873.
I have included the arrival
dates of ships and a search of
birth, death and marriage
records not shown in the
original version.
Anyone requiring further
information or having
suggestions can contact me via
email
lauriem@kooee.com.au.

Notes: Although many of the
prisoners, apart from those who
were native born, are shown in
the gate-book as being free
settlers, most were in fact
transported as convicts.
Gaol Staff (circa 1900)
AHERNE; Daniel
Convict shipping records
show Daniel arrived in
VDL between 1841 and
1850 aboard the Emma,
possibly from NSW. He
arrived at CSG from Port
Arthur 22 December 1876
having previously been
found guilty of Wounding

prior convictions and
literate. Daniel had
originally been a
soldier with the 99th

Nearly twelve months
after his original
sentence on 12 August
1865, Daniel was found
guilty, presumably at
Port Arthur, of Grievous
Bodily Harm and
sentenced to a further
Five Years in Chains.
Upon the closure of Port
Arthur on 31 October
1877, Daniel was
returned to Hobart and
eventually discharged to
the Insane Hospital on

ATKINSON; George
Convict shipping records
show George arrived in
VDL 20 December 1851

possibly call George a
recidivist. His recorded
career of crime extended
from 1872 until 1889. On
9 July 1872 he was
sentenced to Six Years
gaol for Housebreaking
and Larceny and sent to

took place 8 August
1889. George, now 79
years of age, received
another One Month gaol
sentence for this
misdemeanour.

On 20 July 1857 Denis
was found guilty of
Assault and Robbery and
sentenced to A Life of
Penal Servitude at Port
Arthur. His warrant
number 11330. It is
possible he was living
in the Oatlands district
prior to his arrival in
court. He was
transferred to CSG 30
January 1876 when he is
shown as 63 years-old, a
labourer, Catholic, with
three or more prior
convictions and
literate. Denis received
his TOL 21 February 1876
after serving over 18
years in gaol. There is

DORAN; Albert aka Thomas
or William
Albert, also apparently
known as Thomas or
William, arrived in VDL
31 July 1851 aboard the

Ireland. On 17 September
1872 Albert was found
guilty at HSC 17
September 1872 of

His warrant number
10977. He was returned
to CSG 10 March 1875
when shown as 47
years-old, a gardener
Catholic, with three or
more convictions and
literate.
On 18 February 1874
(presumably whilst at
Port Arthur) he had been
sentenced to a further
Six Months for
Absconding from a Gang 2
February 1874.
Albert was released 16
February 1877. However,
on 19 July 1877 Albert
was returned to gaol. He
had been sentenced 12
July 1877 to Six Months
for Stealing Two Silver
Spoons (Value 10/-).
Apparently the crime
took place in the
Glenorchy area as it is
recorded that he was
received from the
Glenorchy police office.
Albert was again
released 11 January
1878. His crime career
was not yet over as on
22 April 1889 he was
sentenced to One Month
for being Idle etc. On
this occasion Albert,
now 68 years of age, was
taken from the New
Norfolk police office to
CSG arriving 24 April
1889. He was finally
released 21 May 1889.
Although there are age
discrepancies there is
little doubt this is the
same Albert Doran
mentioned in Gravesites
of Tasmania. There is no
further information. |
DORAN; John aka KNIGHT
John is another Doran
who spent much of his
time in gaol. He arrived
in VDL 23 September 1843

released 15 January
1876.
However, on 12 January
1877, less than twelve
months later, he was
charged with Exposing
his Person and sentenced
to One Month in gaol.
Between then and his
last offence for
Breaching the Charitable
Institution Act on 9
December 1888, which
resulted in another One
Month sentence, John was
charged with another 23
offences resulting in
various short terms of
imprisonment. Most of
these consisted of
charges of a drunken
nature, stealing
blankets, overcoats and
boots and stealing
stamps and money. He was
finally released 8
November 1888 at the age
of 77 years. There is no
further information. |

and sentenced to a
further Six Months gaol.
This did not seem to
deter Robert, who again
attempted to escape on
23 June 1876. Once again
he was recaptured and
sentenced by a visiting
justice to Twelve Months
in Chains. Still
undeterred, he tried
again and after being
recaptured for the third
time was sentenced to
Four Years and Twelve
Months in Chains. He was

Not to be outdone, he
again appeared on the
CSG lists 27 March 1884.
He had been sentenced to
Three Months gaol for

26 June 1884, at which
time he would have been
about 68 years of age.

number of marriage
possibilities one of
which was to Mary Murphy
at Hobart; 14 November
1859. He is shown as 39
years-old and Mary, 27
years-old. There is no

JEFFREY; Mark
(transported as JEFFERY)
Possibly
the most troublesome
convict ever held at
Port Arthur. ‘Big Mark’
as he was known, arrived
in VDL 3 April 1850
aboard the Eliza (3)
from London with 60
convicts but after a
short stay he was taken
to Norfolk Island. When
that penal settlement
was closed down in 1853,
he was moved back to VDL.
Eventually he was
released with a CP.
However, on 13 February
1872, Mark appeared at
HSC charged with the
Wilful Murder of James
Hunt. At the conclusion
of his trial, he was
found guilty of
Manslaughter and
received a LIFE
sentence. He was sent
back to Port Arthur and
placed in the Model
Prison. Upon the
imminent closure of Port
Arthur he was
transferred to CSG where
he arrived 17 April
1877. Mark is shown as

released to Launceston
holding a TOL. Whilst at
Port Arthur and CSG,
Mark had a total of 52
gaol offences listed
under his name. His last
offence occurred on 7
June 1887. His
fascinating life story
can be read in a book
titled A Burglar’s Life:
The stirring adventures
of the great English
burglar Mark Jeffrey: a
thrilling history of the
dark days of convictism
in Australia (J. Walch &
Sons 1969). (First

It appears the offences
took place at Triabunna

WILLIAMS; John 1874
John
arrived in VDL 1
December 1840 aboard the
Canton from London.
There is no mention of
where he was sentenced
in VDL but it is quite
possible it was as the
HSC. He was found guilty
1 December 1874 of
Uttering a Forged Cheque
and sentenced to Twelve
Years at Port Arthur. He
arrived at CSG with most
of the remaining Port
Arthur convicts 17 April
1877. His warrant number

WILLIAMSON; Allan
According to the convict
shipping lists there may
have been two Allan
Matthew Williamsons. One
arrived in VDL aboard
the Maria Somes (2) from
Portsmouth on 9 August
1850 and the other
arrived per the Blenheim
(3) 24 July 1850 from
Plymouth. Possibly this
person may be one and
the same and a mistake
may have been made in
the shipping records. On
18 November 1867 this
person was found guilty
presumably at HSC of
Uttering a Forged Order
and sentenced to Twelve
Years at Port Arthur. He
eventually arrived at
CSG 17 April 1877 with
most of the remaining
Port Arthur prisoners.
His warrant number 902.
He is shown as 47
years-old, a gardener,
Catholic, with three or
more prior convictions
and literate. He was
released with a TOL 12
December 1877.

he was back at HSC again
charged with Uttering a
Forged Order. This time
he received a Four Year
sentence. He is now
shown as 53 years old.
His warrant number
12483. His religion is
now shown as Protestant.
He was released 26
October 1881 with
remission.
Williamson appears yet
again at HSC 13 December
1881 this time charged
with Uttering a Forged
Request and sentenced to
Five Years plus Three
Months plus Three Days.
His warrant number
14123. It is possible
the three months and
three days may have been
for gaol offences
although it is not
shown. He regained his
freedom 12 June 1886.
His final appearance in
the gate-book occurred
14 August 1888 when
found guilty of — yes,
Uttering a Forged
Cheque. As a result he
received a sentence of
Six Years at CSG. At the
closure of the gate-book
at the end of 1890 he
was still in gaol.
A search of BDM records
show a person of this
name died Hobart; 16
November 1893 aged 73
years. There is no
further information.

aged 66 years. There is
no further information. |
WILLIS; John
John arrived in VDL 9
June 1845 aboard the

Kingston, Ireland. It is
doubtful if John was any
relation to George. On 4

guilty at HSC of
Attempting to Commit an
Unnatural Offence and
sentenced to Ten Years
at Port Arthur. He
arrived at CSG 5

1880 aged 65 years.
There is no further
information. |

Although there are a
number of persons of
this name mentioned in
the gate-book, the one
we are concerned with
arrived in VDL 5
February 1841 aboard the

as 63 years-old, a
labourer, Protestant,
with three or more prior
convictions and
literate. He was
released with a TOL 31
December 1879.
A search of BDM records
show a number of
marriage possibilities
for a person of this
name. A death is also
recorded at Hobart; 18
October 1886 aged 70
years. There is no
further information.

most of the prisoners
were transferred. His

|
YEOMAN; William (Ben)
William, also known as
Ben, arrived in VDL 18
January 1830 aboard the
Bussorah Merchant from
the Downs. However, it
is possible he arrived
in VDL from NSW as he is
shown as being a PH. On
31 October 1857 he was
found guilty (not
mentioned where) of
Stabbing with Intent and
was sentenced to a LIFE
of Penal Servitude at
