    William was accused of stealing two mares on the 1st December 1838.  He was committed to trial at the Somerset Assizes amd was sentenced on the 2nd April 1839 to 15 years transportation to Van Diemen's Land .  He was transferred to the York Prison Hulk at Gosford on the 6th May 1839 and was sent to the Colony per the " Canton arriving in Hobart Town January 1840.

William's Convict Record states he was aged 45, 5'2" tall of stout build and a sallow complexion, long visage, brown hair and grey eyes with a cut on his nose, a blacksmith by trade with a wife and seven children.

On arrival in Van Diemen's Land he was assigned to several people, one being William Gunn of Broadmarsh.  He worked mainly on probation gangs.  On the 4th June 1846 William was sent from Green Ponds to the Police Magistrate at Hamilton where he received his ticket of leave.  He settled in Hamilton and his occupation until his death on the 14th Aug 1873 was listed as farmer.

Mary, the second wife of William followed him to Van Diemen's Land with seven children and a granddaughter Elizabeth aged 2 daughter of Anne (1817).  The family arrived in Launceston per "Bolivar on the 5th October 1842.  Mary listed herself as a widow aged 36 years.  She stated this on an application for assistance to Government for removal expenses for herself and family to Hamilton .

Very little is known of the life of William and Mary from 1846 except William being a farmer at Hamilton and from 1860 he lived on a property owned by his son William Junior at Circus Hamilton.

William died on the 14th Aug 1873 at Hamilton cause of death listed as 'decay of nature' and was buried in the grounds of St. Peter's Church Hamilton along with other family members. Mary died 8th June 1874 age stated as 90 years and was buried with William.
