John Birchall, a convict who came with Collins on the “Calcutta”  He was a 23 year old labourer with a wife and two children when he was sentenced to be transported on 23 October 1802 at Chester having been charged with theft and escaping from goal. He was aquitted of the theft, but sentenced to death for escaping, then reprieved and given life.

 He came without his family, and had his conditional pardon in 1818. He was granted 55 acres at Pittwater (Sorell), and added to it as the years went by and his success as a farmer continued. On 24 October 1809 he married Susannah Bellett, daughter of Jacob Bellett, the First Fleeter who came from Norfolk Island to Van Diemen's Land . They had at least nine children up to 1828, the eldest of whom, James, was the first native born white child in the Sorell area.  

 He died in May 1860, aged 85, and was buried at St George's Sorell.
