Keith Holly Hallam
Keith Holly Hallam was born 16/09/1896 at Sandy Bay, Hobart, the son of Thomas Frederick Hallam and his wife, Emily Annie Winch. He was educated at Queen’s College, Hobart and then attended the University of Tasmania where he gained a B.A. in 1916. After teaching for a short time he went to Melbourne where he gained his M.B. and B.S. in 1921 at Ormond College, University of Melbourne. He was a Resident Medical Officer at the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne in 1921 and at the Queen’s Memorial Infectious Diseases Hospital, Victoria and the Women’s Hospital, Melbourne both in 1922. He was in general practice at Croydon, Victoria with former fellow university student and brother-in-law, Dr. Ian Thomas Cameron for a time. He was Clinical Assistant at the Alfred Hospital from 1923 to 1927 and Honorary Research Worker at the Baker Institute from 1928 to 1930. Keith married Heather Harriet Cameron, the younger daughter of the Very Rev. Donald Allan Cameron, of Kew, Melbourne and his wife, Isabella McIlwraith, 01/02/1923 at Kew. They had a son and daughter, however Heather died 10/10/1926 at Croydon. Three years later Keith married Hilda Florence Bean, only daughter of George Alfred Bean and his wife, Amelia Florence Davey, 22/06/1929 at Hawthorn , Melbourne and they had a daughter. The Hallams travelled to the United Kingdom with their young daughter (the elder two children remained in Melbourne staying with relatives) where Keith studied radiology and gained his D.M.R. & E. at Cambridge University in 1931 and in the same year was the Assistant Radiologist at the London Hospital. Upon their return to Melbourne Keith became Honorary Radiologist at Prince Henry’s Hospital, Melbourne until 1951 when he became Honorary Consulting Radiologist. He was also Consulting Radiologist to the Health Department of Victoria from 1931 to 1973. He joined the Melbourne Diagnostic Group of which he was to become Senior Partner. He was the Vice-President of several medical congresses in Australia. Later he was also a Consultant at Preston and Northcote Community Hospital and Box Hill Hospital, both in Melbourne. He did research into tuberculosis and published two papers on the subject in 1941 and 1947. He became Consultant Radiologist to the Tuberculosis Bureau, Melbourne in 1931 and was Supervisor of Mass Radiography in Victoria from 1943 to 1947. Keith was on the Council of the Victorian Branch of the British Medical Association of which he became President in 1958. He became a Fellow of the Australian Medical Association and Life Member of the Royal Australasian College of Radiologists, both in 1967. He was also on the Council of the Presbyterian Ladies’ College, Melbourne and an Elder of Scots Church, Melbourne. He enjoyed reading and travelling and followed the cricket and football, being a Melbourne supporter and a member of many years standing of the Melbourne Cricket Club. He died 08/02/1980 at Toorak, Melbourne and Hilda died 27/01/1989 also at Melbourne. The above information was compiled by Tim Hallam, grandson of Keith Holly Hallam
