THE TILYARD BROTHERS AND THE ‘ALL BLACKS’

 GRANDSONS OF THOMAS TILYARD OF GLENORCHY TASMANIA  

Sons of Joseph Tilyard, born Glenorchy Tasmania and Ellen Bain Cooper McNay the family are very well known in Wellington Rugby circles as four of the brothers played for the Poneke Football Club but it was James Thomas (Jim) and Frederick Joseph (Fred) who would represent New Zealand with the “All Blacks”.

James Thomas, the older of the brothers was born 27 Aug 1889 in Waratah Tasmania and played at five-eighth in the Christchurch test against Australia on the 20th October 1913.

Then in 1920, he was to play another 10 games as captain.

  Frederick Joseph Tilyard (1896-1954)  

Frederick Joseph Tilyard was born 15th July 1896 in Waratah Tasmania and played for Wellington between 1918 and 1925 and was capped when he appeared in the first of the three unofficial tests against New South Wales at Dunedin in 1923, scoring one of New Zealand's three tries in the 19-9 win.  His contribution to the Poneke Club was enormous serving on the club's committee between 1918 and 1946.  He also had two stints as secretary (1927-35 and 1942-46) and was the club's delegate to the Wellington union 1936-45.He is remembered  annually by the presentation of a shield in his name in a match against Petone. cousin of the Tilyard brothers, Jack Griffiths, who also played for the Poneke Club, was to play for the ‘All Blacks’ in 30 matches and was to captain them in two tests against Australia in 1936                                                                             James Thomas Tilyard (1889-1966)
