RUTH HOLLY
Ruth Holly was born circa 1837, Melksham, Wiltshire, England, the daughter of John Holly (born circa 1816, Wiltshire, died 1871, Hobart), a tanner and his wife, Maria Bowell or Bolwer (born circa 1811, Wiltshire, died 1873, Hobart). Ruth immigrated to Tasmania on board the ‘Louisa’ disembarking 10/01/1853 with her sisters, Sophia Mary (born circa 1834, Melksham) and Mathilda (born circa 1838, Melksham). They were assisted immigrants described as nurses and housemaids. Also, on board were William Holly, his wife, Elizabeth Poulson and their four surviving children, George William, Susannah, Sarah and Eliza. William Holly may have been the uncle of the three sisters. The sisters’ parents and their brother, Charles Holly (born circa 1840, Melksham) also immigrated to Tasmania probably in 1851 or 1852. Ruth married Thomas Hallam, the son of Joseph Hallam and his wife, Maria Loach, 29/08/1858, Glenorchy, Tasmania. He was a farmer, orchardist and storekeeper in partnership with his brother, John at Glenorchy. He was also a Glenorchy Shire Councillor and a Justice of the Peace. They had four sons and seven daughters of whom one daughter died in infancy. Ruth died 19/12/1901 and Thomas died 15/01/1906 and they are buried at Cornelian Bay, Tasmania. The Methodist church in Glenorchy has two stained glass windows dedicated to them. Please see the Hallam Family History for more information. Ruth’s sister, Sophia Mary married James O’Brien, 1869, New Norfolk, Tasmania. They moved to Melbourne, Victoria, circa 1873 where their only child, Sophia Jane died 14/09/1880, aged nine years. Sophia Mary died 05/08/1898, Melbourne. Their brother, Charles also went to Melbourne where he was a butcher and a distiller. He married Lavenia Mary Cubitt, the daughter of John Cubitt, 28/05/1885, Melbourne. They had four children, Minnie Lavenia Mary (born 1886, died 26/12/1917, Melbourne), Walter Charles (born 1888, died 02/08/1905, Melbourne), Lavenia Sophia (born 1890, died 13/04/1984, Melbourne) and Alice May (born 1893, Melbourne, died 21/08/1974, Healesville, Victoria). Minnie, Lavenia and Alice all married and had families in Victoria. Charles died 30/01/1902 and Lavenia Mary died 13/09/1954, both in Melbourne. It is interesting to note that William Holly and his wife had two more sons, born in Tasmania, one of whom survived and he was named Thomas Henry. Thomas Henry Holly married Sarah Unice Millhouse, who as his widow married Thomas Hallam’s widowed brother, William Henry Hallam, 23/09/1897, Battery Point, Tasmania. John Buckney, the son of John Buckney and his wife, Sarah Holly and grandson of William Holly married Lillias Isabella Hallam, daughter of William Henry Hallam and his first wife, Eliza Rosetta Wheatley, 01/01/1896, Glenorchy.
