If you could spare a few dollars to help with the running costs of hosting this website to keep it alive would be very much appreciated.

Thankyou from Gravesites of Tasmania in advance.

GEORGE STEEDMAN

George arrived in Tasmania as an assisted migrant on “Queen Victoria ” in 1855, aged 18, along with his brother Robert, aged 24.  He found work on various properties around the southern midlands.  A small insight into his life and character is given by an appearance in the Oatlands Court on 25 January 1861.  He was charged by his employer, Edward Francis Sanderson, with absenting himself from his occupation as a reaper without his employer's consent on 21 January.  He was described as an able bodied young man.  He admitted he was at fault, and said that he was willing to return and finish the reaping, in fact he was going on the day he was complained of.  Mr Sanderson said that was what he required.  The defendant was a capital working man, but got abroad when he took too much strong drink.  The Police Magistrate told Steedman, "Well we are willing to let you off and at the request of your master we discharge you upon the payment of costs merely."

George Steedman married Julia Mansfield 15th December 1863 at Mt. Pleasant and over the next years they had 11 children.

George died 11th April 1918 at Mount Seymour and was buried at the Oatlands Cemetery
