Sentence pronounced by the recorder was transportation for seven years.Arrived on the Calcutta Departed Portsmouth 4/24/1803 and Arrived in Hobart 1/1/1804. Gaoled at Poultry and transferred to the 'Captivity' hulk at Portsmouth. He attended the Hobart musters in 1811 and 1818. Together with John Cruse (q.v.) he absented himself from labour in 1807 and was tried by [Rev. Robert] Knopwood and others who sentenced him to 300 lashes. Drowned when Urias Allender's ferry was overturned between Hobart and Kangaroo Point, 24 September 1819. [This date differs from other sources recorded]. Briscoe [had] received a 50-acre land grant from Gov. Macquarie, which was farmed by his widow, together with a further 20 acres which she purchased after his death...An uncle, Capt. Brimstone, assisted with the upbringing of the children."

General Notes: Mary Ann Briscoe was born in Hobart Town in 1809, when 'the camp' was little more than 5 years old. Her father had arrived as a convict with David Collins first fleet to Tasmania, and her grandfather was with the first fleet to Australia. Mary Ann married young at age 15 to William John Parrot. Their first son was born late the following year at Clarence, Tasmania. Between 1827 and 1829 however she entered into a common-law marriage with William James Cockerell, with whom she would ultimately have seven children between the years 1829-1841. The last two children are also listed as being the children of Charles Troy/Froy/Fry, with whom Mary Ann had a further common-law marriage in the early 1840's. In 1846 Mary Ann married for the second time to Thomas Carroll, a V.D.L. Co. Indentured servant, and they had four children. Mary Ann used her mother's maiden name of Goodwin for her marriage to Thomas Carroll, which proved to be a barrier for some years against discovering her true identity. The following is a transcription of a letter from Mary Ann Carroll to her son held by the Allport Library, Murray Street, Hobart, Tasmania: Circular Head Forest Oct 26th 1858 My Dearest Son, I am happy to acknowledge the receipt of your most welcome letter, dated Sep 9th. I trust that this will meet you and your wife and family in Good Health as it leaves me and mine at present, thanks be to God for all his mercies... There is nothing in this world would give me more pleasure than to see you all again, and all my dear little grandchildren as I have never had the pleasure of seeing one of them as yet. I think the sight of you all would cause me to live a few years longer. Your brothers Robert and George have been kind enough to send for your brother Charles, they say that they will do something for him by way of Learning him a trade and he is very anxious to come as he does not recollect one of you. I must send him to you first, as I must trespass on you to get him to his brothers as you are the first that he is likely to meet with and the nearest to town, he is fourteen years of age and very active and sensible and anxious for a trade (so it) and feels so delighted at the thought of coming amongst you all that he thinks every minute an hour until he can get away and when he reaches he will tell you all about the family affairs and about all the old neighbours. I [am] astonished to find that you never receieved my letters, but I shall send them through a Differant Channel for the future and Correspond regular[y]. I am glad to hear that Williams wife married again for the sake of the dear little children. It was my intention to have taken one of them but now that I find that she is married again I think that (they) it will be better not. When you write again tell me the childrens names and their sex and what Country woman the mother is. I could (would) very much like to know what ...poor dear William sentiments was, I think I fancy it might have been respecting his little children, may the lord have mercy on his soul, and that his children may have Grace to follow I befest of the Great God. When you write again Seal the letter and direct on the back for me, then put it in the envelope and direct to Charles O'Connor, Rose Banks, Circular Head, Forest. Glad to hear of your father enjoying good health in his old age. When you see Mrs Kirby again tell her that I('d) be glad to hear from her. I have not got her address since she was moved from Big Burke street. [The following was overwritten on the verso of the letter). Please to give my kind love to all your brothers and when they write to direct the same way that I have described here, then I shall be sure to get it. Give my love to your wife and children for me and except (accept?) the same your self, from your affectionate and loving Mother until Death, Mary Ann Carroll" The reason for the existance of the letter in the Allport collection has yet to be ascertained. Allport was a solicitor so it may be that he was Mary Ann's or Thomas Carroll's lawyer. An unidentified correspondant has also relayed that one of Mary Ann's descendants married into the Allport family. The reference to "William" in the letter probably relates to the death of William James Parrott on 30 Sep 1857 in Andersons Creek, Victoria. Thomas Carroll died in 1862 and two years after his death Mary Ann was married for the last time to Robert Tuthill only 3 days after her daughter married John Bellinger at the same venue. The couple produced no children, and no-one seens sure exactly how many children Mary Ann had in total. Marjorie Tipping remarks in Convicts Unbound that "When ... Mary Ann died in 1896, age 89 (sic), she was reported to be the oldest Tasmanian [native], had married four times and had fourteen children...". This quote seems to have been lifted from the obituary reproduced below:

Death has carried off Mrs Mary Ann Tuthill, one of the most respected and
noblest of women. Deceased, up to the time of her death, was recognised as
the oldest living Tasmanian native, having been born in Hobart on November
16, 1807. Thus has she lived until the 16th of next month she would have
attained the age of 89 years. Her parents, who came to this colony in the
first ship arriving from England, were Benjamin and Sarah Briscoe. Her
father having been drowned in crossing the Derwent between Hobart and
Kangaroo Point when she was but 10 years of age, she was taken care of and
brought up be her uncle, Captain Brunstone, who in those days kept a store
Collins street, Hobart. Having married a Mr Panott in 1824, she still lived
in Hobart up to the time of the death of her husband, which took place on
his way from England, whence he had gone to get possession of large
properties which he inherited. A few years later deceased again married Mr
B. Cockerell, and afterwards lived at Jerusalem, Richmond, and Sorell, where
Mr Cockerell died, leaving 11 children to be brought up, including the
Cockerell Bros., of Victoria, New South Wales and New Zealand, the
well-known agricultural implement makers and inventors.
In 1841 two of the sons started in the blacksmithing business at Circular
Head and in 1843 the deceased lady, disposed of her business in Sorell Town
and followed her sons, and she resided with them until she married Mr Thos.
Carroll in 1846, when she removed the Forest, where she lived up to the time
of her death. By this marriage there were three children, all of whom
survive her, namely, Mr Thomas Carroll, Mount Bischoff, Mrs J. Bellinger, of
Forest, and Mrs M. Tierney, the youngest. The latter, with unselfish and
self-sacrificing zeal, has cared and attended her mother for the last ten
years, Mr Thomas Carroll having died in 1862, she again married Mr Tuthill.
Deceased used to relate many incidents of the early days of the colony, and
being intelligent and having a wonderful memory, her conversation was both
entertaining and instructive. She held a certificate for proficiency in
midwifery dated back as far as 1824. She was one of twelve specially
selected and trained by the Government for the profession, which duties she
performed until recently. Her knowledge of medicine was extensive, and
whenever her aid or advice was required she ungrudgingly gave it. Not until
December last did she ever receive advice from a medical man and then not
until Dr A. Jackson was brought unknowingly to her. The deceaseds
grandmother lived to the grand old age of 107 years, and is buried in St.
Davids cemetery, Hobart. She was only confined to her bed for a week before
her death, and was conscious to the last, having received all the rites of
the Roman Catholic Church.
The funeral took place on the 6th inst., and was largely attended. The Rev.
Father Cunningham read the burial service, the pallbearers being Messrs. P
and M. Breheny, H.G. Spicer, and Geo. Tuthill. Tatlow Bros. As undertakers
carried out their part in a complete manner. Deceased always had a kind word
for everyone, whether absent or present.

There was a letter at the Melbourne Post Office for John Cockerell in Jan 1853. John had an interest in inventing farm machinery, leading to patents lodged which are now in the collection of the State Library of Victoria. He also worked for Roberts and Ferguson, Hoddle Street, Melbourne, Victoria.[29] John (Parrott) Cockerell. Obituary: Evelyn Observer, Vic. 1906. Morang (From our own correspondent.) There died at Somerton, at his son's residence, on the 23rd March, a very old colonist in the person of the late John Cockerell, who for nearly fifty years carried on the business of a blacksmith and wheelwright in the Plenty district. Mr Cockerell first arrived in Victoria when a lad of only fifteen years of age, being then on board a whaler. The vessel he was in called in at Portland, then often spoken of as Henty's Settlement, and after staying a short time, sailed for New Zealand, where Mr Cockerell was for some time. Returning to Tasmania in the early forties, he came again to Victoria, this time to permanently settle in it. He worked for some time for the then well known firm at Roberts and Ferguson, of Hoddle Street. He then married Catherine, the youngest daughter of the late Mr John Grierson, a retired officer in the British Army. In 1853 he came to Plenty, opening business as a wheelwright and blacksmith near the old Plough Inn, which was situated on Mill Park, 121/2 miles from Melbourne. From there in 1854 he came to the Yan Yean district, at first working for his father, the late William Cockerell, but after a short time he opened out for himself at the cross-roads where the bridge Inn now stands, his premises being just opposite the hotel. Here for many years he did a splendid business. Being a first-class tradesman, especially in heavy work, in the early days orders for bullock wagons, drays &c., came from all parts of the colony, and indeed from Tasmania and New South Wales; also, he had the good fortune for a long time to have as his wheelwright Mr Charles Johnson, of Morang, who was a justly celebrated for his good woodwork as Mr Cockerell was for his ironwork. Mr Cockerell, at the time of his starting business at Yan Yean, was ably assisted by his brother-in-law, the late Moses Thomas, of Mayfield, Morang, who bought the land on which the deceased started business, first of all for Messrs George and John Grierson, who in their turn sold out to Mr Cockerell, who, assisted by Mr Thomas, was thus able to purchase one of the best blocks of land in the Yan Yean district. After many years of hard work the deceased fell on troubled times; he lost his home, then his wife died, and from that time he lost heart, and the business passed out of his hands into his son's, George, who now carries it on. Mr Charles Draper, J.P., of Arthur's Creek, now owns the land. Latterly Mr Cockerell lived with his youngest son Charles, at Somerton, where he passed quietly away on the 13th March. He leaves a family of six sons and five daughters, all grown up and settled in life, to mourn his death. The deceased had a mania for patents, and many inventions he tried to perfect but with doubtful success. He was undoubtedly very ingenious, but seemed unable to perfect the many inventions he tried. Peace to his soul say I, and yet another link of the sadly broken chain of the associations connected with the early history of the colony gone. The early settlers now alive are very few, and fast disappearing altogether. Mr Cockerell, in his prosperous days, was of a very hospitable nature and many were those who could testify to the generous nature of his hospitality: but mining speculations and patents were the cause of his downfall. Let us trust he has gone where he will find peace and comfort and know neither pain nor tribulation. His remains were buried beside his wife in the Melbourne Cemetery on Monday 26th, and were followed to the grave by mourning friends who knew him well. General Notes: The following information was supplied by Carole Hayes: "George Cockerell came to Port Phillip from Tasmania as early as 1848 when he was a witness to the marriage of his cousin Edward Bunker at St. James Church, Melbourne.. He had arrived sometime in the 1840's with his father, returning to Tasmania. On 4 Sep 1846 he arrived in Melbourne aboard the 'Pedlar' from Circular Head, Tasmania. He later made another trip back to Tasmania and returned [to Victoria] on 13 Mar 1848 on the 'Ellen and Elizabeth'. George worked with his father at Yan Yea where William James Cockerell is believed to have had his forge. This would have been on the road to the site of Yan Yean reservoir." He married Mary Ann Brace in 1852 and their first seven children were born in Victoria. Around 1863 the family emigrated to New Zealand where they had a further six children. Mary Ann Cockerell (nee Brace) died in 1902 and George remarried the same year to Henrietta , also known as Henrietta King. He died in 1920 in St. Albans, New Zealand.[29] George is recorded by Robert Gault twice: once as a child of W. J. Cockerell and Mary Ann Briscoe, and marrying Rachael Jane St. John and having a child John Francis Cockerell b. 1857; and secondly as the child of W. J. Cockerell and Mary Ann Bunker, marrying Mary Ann Brace, and having 6 children between 1853 and 1862.[32] Research: Birth registered under the surname of Cockerill.[48]

General Notes: Cause of death: Cystitis Peritonitis The following information was supplied by Carole Hayes: "Robert was one of the first settlers in Yea, having joined his father in Victoria in early 1850. Records show R. Cockerell sailing from Circular Head on 20 Nov 1850 on board the 'Ellen and Elizabeth" and arriving in Melbourne 22 Nov 1850. Another 'Cotterill' [sic] left Circular Head on 23 May 1850 and arrived 28 May 1850 on board the 'Emergency' but which member of the family this is isn't indicated. Police Gazette of 1852 mentions an unclaimed letter for Robert Cockerell of Melbourne. Robert's blacksmith forge was the site of the future post office in Yea and he owned land there: Lot 34, Allot. 13, Sect. 9, Area 2 Roods, Price 4 Pounds; Lot 35, Allot. 14, Sect. 9, Area 2 Roods 35 Perches, Price 5 Pounds 15 shillings. The town lots were on the corner of Whatton Place and Miller Street. [Robert married Ann Loan in 1855 in Kilmore, Victoria and the couple would eventually have elven children.] He lived in Yea until he moved to Fairy Street, Warnambool in 1877. In 1880 he had a forge at 22 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne and his residence at 13 Peel Street. In 1883 he was at 49 Peel Street. By 1886 he was in Invercargill." Ann Cockerell (nee Loan) died in 1882 and in 1884 Robert remarried to Mary Ann Scully in Melbourne. Three more children were born when the couple were in New Zealand, the last being Ellen Jane in 1890. Robert died a pauper just 12 years later in 1902, it is not known when his widow passed away. Robert is credited with inventing the Disc Plough, and the Fire Escape, and had a general interest in inventing farm machinery.[29]

Emma Williams was born in 1887, the eldest of her parents five children. "Emma was a largish lady, with a round face, watery-blue eyes, and prematurely smowy white hair. She had shapely legs, which were much admired, even in later years. She displayed a lively interest in everything from the latest fashions to the newest dance craze. She enjoyed horse racing (especially the Night Trots) and was known to indulge in a little flutter, although she preferred to bet on jockeys rather than horses.
One source of amusement to her family was that Emma always carried a small flask of brandy in her handbag, which she maintained was strictly for medicinal purposes. Another grand-daughter, Shirley McKellar, recalls having seen Emma on more than one occasion surreptiously adding a little brandy to her cup of tea!
Emma was known to be a good cook and regularly provided sausage rolls and cakes for the suppers for the dances at Forest and Mengha. It is interesting to note that at some time during her late sixties, Emma was employed for a period as a cook at Woolnorth, the former V.D.L. Company property.
Emma loved to accompany family members on trips to other parts of the state. On those occasions, off would come the pinny she invariably wore, on would go the familiar black coat and black (or sometimes red) hat, a few neccesities would be thrown into a bag, and she would announce she was ready to go.
Grand-daughter Dorothy Walker recalls an amusing incident that occured in 1959 on a trip to Hobart via the East Coast. While travelling down the bends on Elephant Pass, one of the back tyres on the car developed a puncture. Emma's son Owen was required to change it in a rather hazardous position so, on our subsequent arrival at St. Helen's, he declared himself in need of a well-earned beer. As the story goes, Emma was persuaded by Dorothy to try a Pimms and, liking it so much, Emma decided she would have another of those Bimms. Needless to say she was told that they thought she had had enough!
It was on the same trip that Emma climbed to the top of the shot tower at Taroona - no small feat for a 72 year old, given that there were 258 steps and 17 landings. It remains a fitting tribute to her spirit of adventure.
Emma died at her home at South Forest on 27 Dec 1962, aged 75 years."

She taught at Bothwell Primary.Kempton Primary and Brighton Army camp Pre School.
The Pre School then moved to Brighton Primary.
Barbara's first year out of teachers college she taught at Bothwell in 1956. This was the year that one of her students was shot in the play ground. The little girl was Frances Mann.
Barbara wanted a private funeral so there was a small gathering at the Millingtons Crematorium at Mornington.
The service was conducted by X News reader Tom Payne.
Her ashes are to be thrown over "Parki" at Apsley where she was born.
Her three daughters granted her wish and had half at "Parki" and the other half with her husband John at St Marks at Pontville.
Medical Notes: Rhumatoid arthritis at the age of 47 Was in a car accident in 1993 recieved a broken left leg and had a 12 inch plate in her leg.
Had an over active Thyroid problem and had nuclear treatment in 1996.
The children were not allowed near her for at least a week.
She contracted enphyzemia in 1997.
