General Notes: Sabina was born in Byaduk, and lived there all her life. Her mother died when Sabina was only eleven years old, so she left school to look after her father, four younger brothers, and a youngest sister - her oldest sister, Eva, had left home to find work.
In 1892 she married David Tyres, who had arrived from Leicestershire some years earlier. The marriage was blessed with four children; as well as looking after her father and caring for him while he was ill before he died.
Leter as her own children were starting to grow up her youngest sister Matilda (Hutchinson) died, leaving two boys- Harry seven years old and Frank seven months. Sabina took these two nephews into her home to care for them as well as her own children; Harry went to other relatives later on, but Frank stayed with her and her family until he was old enough to leave home and go out to work. Then on 20th May 1935 her youngest daughter Vera (Walkley), who had been ill for several years, died leaving a seven-year-old daughter (Jean)- so once again Sabina took on the role of rearing the grandchild.
In her younger married life she used to bake cakes etc. and enter them in various shows around the district, travelling by horse and buggy. She was well known for her generosity to anyone in need and never turned anyone away from the door hungary. She was also an ardent lover of flowers and a very keen gardener, and was a well known and highly repected resident of Byaduk, with great faith and religious convictions. Sabina died on 2nd of October 1944, a few days before her 74th birthday.

He was firstly engaged to a "'Gibson" girl. He began construction of the "Riverside" homestead for them to live in once they were married. But he ended up marrying the architects daughter, Nell Harrison.
The late Mr. Falkenberg was born at his parents' home "bonnie Hills", Byaduk, Victoria.
The property being sixteen miles south of Hamilton and six miles north of Macarthur was well situated for markets, and the land was fertile.
Mr. Falkenberg went to live at Wannon fourteen miles west of Hamilton as a young man to oversee this part of his father's estate. It was there he started bee-keeping in a large way, producing up to 7 and a half tons of honey each season from 50-70 hives. At the time he was one of the pioneers of the industry. He "batched" there for a few years until he met and married Mrs Ellen Harrison, a young woman of Englash birth. Two sons and a daughter- Stanley, Dorothy and John were born to them.
The late Mr. Falkenberg interested himself in local affairs, taking a prominant part in converting the old Wannon Hotel into a public hall. The nearby Wannon and Nigretta Falls were maintained by a committee of which Mr. Falkenberg was a prominant member.
The Anglican Church at Wannon in the Diocese of Coleraine was where he regularly worshipped with his wife and family. Mr. Falkenberg's work on the vestry of the Church in Coleraine is commemorated on one of the Church's stone fence posts which record the untiring work of several devoted supporters. Many public donation lists for good causes found his name among them in the "Hamilton Spectator".
Over the years opportunities to purchase adjoining land from neighbours presented themselves and Mr. Falkenberg was able to increase the acreage of "Riverside" to a very substantial holding.
His first grand child Peter, born to Stanley and his wife Mary in December 1936 was a great source of pride and joy.
Following his passing, after a horse accident, Mr. Falkenberg was the subject of a Memorial Service at Christ Church Anglican at Hamilton, where a very large congregation testified to the esteem in which the gentleman was held.
Of a cheerful dispostion and a deep thinker the late Mr. Falkenberg was confident and courageous towards evry project he undertook whether for his own family's benefit of fr the welfare of the community.
After Wihelm's death the "Riverside Patnership" between his sons Stanley and John was formed and after Stanley's son Peter had completed his schooling and spent some years with his father and uncle he joined the patnership. This patnership continued until rcent years when Peter's son Nicholas completed his education at Glenorminston Agricultural College and joined his father on the property. John has retained the name "Riverside" and Peter and Nicholas have formed "Mepundah Pastoral Company".

General Notes: Charlie was born at Byaduk, and was only seven years old when his mother died in childbirth. He and his brothers and sisters were raised by their father, with the help of a housekeeper, on the family sheep property "Bonnie Hills". In 1900 he married Florence Gibson, but they parted ways in the early 1920s and Florence moved to Gruyere with the children.
Charlie did not follow the Falkenberg family tradition of sheep breeding, preferring dairy cattle. When he moved to Colac he had a fine Jersey herd, and was well repected as a fine judge of dairy sheep cattle. He won many prize ribbons at the local shows and was for many years a judge of dairy cattle at the Royal Melbourne Show. For many years he was secretary of the Colac Butter Factory.
Charlie worked on the Maroondah Dam at Healsville and worked with the last gang of workers on the concrete dam (circa 1925). After the dam was completed he worked at quite a few places in Gippsland, then in about 1940 he went to Lake Bolac to work on the station properties of the Austin brothers. Ronnie Austin was his boss, and during the years of WWII he and a land army girl virtually ran the place. After he retired from Ronnie Austin's he lived at his house at Lake Bolac, and did odd jobs as a carpenter and painter. He was well liked by the people of Lake Bolac. He had his own litlle block of land and house next to the Catholic Church and was quite happy with his horses, a few sheep and his dogs.
After a long illness Charlie passed away in the Austin Hospital at Heidelberg on 18th February 1960, aged 86 years. It is believed that some of his ashes were scattered on his property at Lake Bolac and the rest buried in the Byaduk Cemetery.

Tilly and John had three children of their own but the oldest Ernest died a few months old, and Tilly died when Frank was only 3 months old. Frank was brought up by his aunt Sabina Tyres nee Falkenberg; in his latter years John preffered fishing on the Portland jetty to working at carpentry.

A Macarthur district farmer and staunch community worker, Mr. Ernest Falkenberg, has died at the age of 88.
Son of the late Johann and Ann Falkenberg, Mr Falkenberg was born at Byaduk and spent most of his life in the Macarthur district.
A faithful Macarthur United Church member, he was also a member of Macarthur Racing Club, School Commitee and Fire Brigade and recieved a fire brigade long service badge after 30 years work. He also helped many local charities, including State Relief, Red Cross, the Salvation Army, hospital and commitees for the blind.
Mr Falkenberg married Miss Maud Mary Brian of Macarthur, who died some years ago.
They had two children, Claude of Macarthur, and Joyce (Mrs. Ron Holcombe) of Byaduk, and six grandchildren.
After a service at Macarthur United Church, conducted by Rev. K. Cross, the funeral left for the Macarthur Cemetery.

580. Ernest Percy Draeger was born 11 of March 1929 in Devonport Cemetery (Anglican Section) and died on 13 Mar 2006 at age 77. The cause of his death was Parkinsons Disease.

General Notes: He was cremated and his ashed buried in a garden he love so much.
Ernie came to live with his Grandmother's sister after his Mother died. He was aged 9 when he got sent to Launceston to live at 13 Vermont Road with Francis May Gutteridge and her husband Samuel Roy Robinson. May, as she was known, had one grown son Keith who was at the time close to getting married to Joan Tolson Crooks. His older brother Bill had already joined the navy and would often send money down to his little brother to let him know he had not been forgotten. When he was 21 he met the girl he would marry at the picture theatre where he and a friend (Tony Goyns) sat behind Barbara and her friend (Betty West) and threw Jaffas at them. The boys followed the girls home. Barbara was only 16 at the time but a beautiful relationship followed. Ernest married Barbara Dawn Sayer (born 27^th Aug 1935) on 29^th October 1955 in St Georges Church at Invermay, Launceston. They were married by Canon F.H. Lansdell. The best man was Ernies brother Bill and Matron of Honour was Mrs Phyliss Moir. Junior Bridesmaids were Gillian and Dianne Robinson, daughters of Keith that would go on to be my God Mothers. Honeymoon was spent on the ship "Naracoopa" on a trip from Hobart up the East Coast of Tasmania.
Ernie worked all his life at a place called Patons and Baldwins, later it would be known as Coats Patons. He started on 7^th Jan 1946 and was offered a a job in the fitting and machining shop. He had taken up an electrical course at school, but had failed. Fitting and turning was also one of the subjects he had to do with the course, and as he rather liked the work and seemed to get high marks for it in the exams, Ernie decided to apply for the job.
It was a 5 year apprenticeship which included going to night school to do 4 subjects over 4 years. Subjets included calcs, drawing, theory and practical.. Ernie received exemptions in grade 1 and 2 cals, grade 1 and 2 drawing and grade 1 practical as he had attended the L.T.T.S. and had taken these grades before. Ernie finished night school after 3 years and received a fitting and machining trade certificate.
Ernest Retired on the 18th Nov 1988 after 42 years of working there.

Donald Kenneth Dunkerley or Don as he preferred to be known was born on 4th October 1925 to parents Alda Cora nee Lindner and Leonard Sydney Dunkerley. Don has one sister, Sharley Thompson and one brother, Raymond Dunkerley.
In the early days the family lived in Campbelltown and North Adelaide.
Don attended North Adelaide Public School to 1938, achieving his Qualifying Certificate. He then attended Thebarton Boys Technical School achieving his Junion and Intermediate Technical certificates in 1940 and 1941.
Don started an apprenticeship with SA Railways at Islington at age 16 years. He undertook and examination for the apprenticeship at The School of Mines. There were 350 applicants and 85 positions for apprentices. Don signed his indentures on 27 May 1942 for an apprenticeship as a fitter, and the apprenticeship was for 5 years.
The apprenticeship involved 3 hours of night school at The School of Mines for 3 years and half a day a week at Islington Technical College learning mechanical drawing and theory.
His first year wages were 18 shillings and 9 pence per week.
During his apprenticeship Don spent time in various sections learning about boilet mounting, motion, air brakes and wheels and the new Loco section. He was taught by men who had learnt their trade in the English railway system.
In his 4th. year Don worked in the New Loco section and had a fitter's assistant and an apprentice. He built the first leading bogie for Loco 520, Sir Malcolm Barclay-Harvey. At that time the loco was destined for work at The Express on the Adelaide Port Pirie Line.
He also built the first diesel electric loco in SA, 350 class shunt engines 350 and 351. Don built the biesel 900 class engines, the first two 900 and 901 saw service as engines for the Melbourne express.
At a later stage Don worked in the Reclamation Area, where steam trains were shunted from Mile End to be cut up for scrap. He was directed by management to have his team of oxycutters to cut up all classes of locos into 8 foot square sections to be carted to Port Adelaide for shipment to Japan as scrap metal. This would have been disheartening for a man who had started his career as an apprentice on steam locos.
On one occasion Don's manager asked him about the status of steam engine 520. It was next in line to be scrapped. It was saved and now belongs to Australian Railway Historical Society Steam/Ranger. A couple of days later Don received another call and was able to save engine 621. The Duke of Edinburgh, which is also used by Steam Ranger. He was glad to be able to save these magnificent machines but saddened that so many others were cut up for scrap.
Don always though that we should have more of these engines in service today as part of our heritage.
Don was able to turn his hand to many projects. He built the entire family home at Broadview including the stone masonry work. Marjorie and Don built the house bricks together and the home was built over a peiod of 3 years.
He was an extrordinary man and his loss is felt by many.
Don was an avid sporting person. He had a passion for playing soccer when he was young and teachers at sunday school tried to bribe him with lollies to stay in sunday school but he would sneak away to play soccer.
Don played for West Adelaide soccer club and later for Railways soccer club. He won a number of trophies during his playing days but such is the generosity of Don he donated these trophies to underprivileged children where the trophies were reengraved and passed out.
Marjorie and Don were married in Archer street Methodist Church on 20 September 1947. They have two beautiful daughters, Kayelene and Cynthis and two grandchildren David and Lauren Sanders.
Don was a loving man, unselfish and devoted to his family, he was cherished and always there when they needed him.
Don and Marjorie enjoyed 55 wonderful years of marriage, a union that was cut short last week with Don's passing.
Don attended Christian Endeavour Sunday school during his early years and both he and Marjorie have been parishioners of this Church for many years. Don had a lovely singing voice and was an active member of the Hotham Uniting church choir.
After Don retired he and marjorie chose to spend their retirement on the South Coast and moved to their home at Clifton Beach overlooking the beach and the Port Elliot Victor Harbor Railway Line, this section outside the house is known by all steamranger volunteers at Dunkerley Siding. When a train passes this point the drivers were informed that they had to blow the train whistle. The whistle will be blown again this afternoon as a mark of respect when Don takes his final journey on Steam Ranger from Port Elliot to Victor Harbor.
Don was a member of Munchenberg Family Committee and took an active part. He was also involved with Yankalilla Senior Citizens Club, The River Society at Goolwa and the National Trust.
When Don continues his journey this afternoon to Port Elliot Railway station and onward to the Victor Harbor Cemetery he will be carried by 6 SteamRanger volunteers.
General Loco and Depot News: Steam Ranger Enthusiast. Readers were have been saddened to read of the death of long time supporter Don Dunkerley earlier this year. Don declared "a railway workshop is not a workshop unless it has a pit" and was delighted when some of the SATC Grant money we received was used to fund a pit of the elevated rail type.
Construction (below) involved a significant civil engineering project and Don followed its construction closely during his frequent visits to Mt Barker. Naturally Don insisted he officially declare the pit open which he did with great flair and pride when cutting the ribbon, not very long before his unfortunate demise.
As a gesture to Don, the pit was named
"Don's Pit" and was declared as such on the 23rd July with the unveiling of a plaque by his family at a special ceremony and BBQ.
