General Notes: Although he was a bright child, his mother Eva sensed there was something not quite right with his hearing. Later examination by a specialist confirmed her suspicions when it found that Jim had been born without eardrums and nothing could be done to enable him to hear. During the next two ot three years Eva and the family helped Jim as much as they could, but realised for Jim's education they would have to send him to Melbourne to attend the Victorian School for Deaf Children as a boarder. Jim commenced in 1905, aged 6 years. At the deaf school Jim learnt carpentary- a trade which he was to use all his life- and played lacrosse. He spent ten proffitable years at the school, ending up as dux. His family still have letters he wrote home, and there is no doubt Eva was thankful she made the difficult decision to send him there.
Another pupil at the deaf school was a Pansy Elliott of Mildura. Jim and Pansy were married in Mildura in 1921- early in the morning so they could catch the train to Melbourne! Pansy's outfit was made from cream serge, and she later made a baby's shawl from the material, embroidering it with cream silk. The shawl was used by all her children and some grandchildren, and is still in the family.
Jim and Pansy's first home was on a farm at Ouyen. Their first son was born there- prematurely after Pansy had a fall- but only lived one day. Four more children were born to Jim and Pansy- all with hearing- but the youngest died from diptheria only five years old.
Jim and Pansy moved to Baldwyn in 1927, buying a home for three hundred pounds, but returned to Mildura because of the depression. Jim worked for Pansy's father at the sawmill.
When war was declared Jim went to Melbourne to enlist, but his deafness resulted in his employment with the CCC (Civil Construction Corps). He was involved in the building what is now the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital. The family followed Jim to Melbourne in 1940, Mavis finding work, and June and Daphne continuing their schooling at MacRobertson Girls High School. Later Mavis joined the Australian Womens Army Service, where she met and married Jack Morgan in 1945.
After all the girls were married, Jim and Pansy stayed on at the Balwyn property, spending much time in their garden. Pansy died in 1983 and Jim in 1985.

756. Barbara Sally Watkins was born 24th Apr 1935 in Apsley "Parki" and died on 10 Oct 2002 in Royal Hobart Hospital at age 67. The cause of her death was Community Aquired Pneumonia.
General Notes:
Was born at 7.30am in the front room at "Parki" at Apsley. She was a breach baby.
She taught at Bothwell Primary.Kempton Primary and Brighton Army camp Pre School.
The Pre School then moved to Brighton Primary.
Barbara's first year out of teachers college she taught at Bothwell in 1956. This was the year that one of her students was shot in the play ground. The little girl was Frances Mann.
Barbara wanted a private funeral so there was a small gathering at the Millingtons Crematorium at Mornington.
The service was conducted by X News reader Tom Payne.
Her ashes are to be thrown over "Parki" at Apsley where she was born.
Her three daughters granted her wish and had half at "Parki" and the other half with her husband John at St Marks at Pontville.
Medical Notes: Rhumatoid arthritis at the age of 47 Was in a car accident in 1993 recieved a broken left leg and had a 12 inch plate in her leg.
Had an over active Thyroid problem and had nuclear treatment in 1996.
The children were not allowed near her for at least a week.
She contracted enphyzemia in 1997.
